Starting a vinyl collection

5 tips for true record lovers

Vinyl is back — and stronger than ever. Whether you've just bought a turntable or have been hesitant for years: collecting LPs is a wonderful way to experience music for real. But where do you start?

Here are five practical tips to get you started.

1. Buy music you really love

It sounds logical, but many beginners make the mistake of buying "collectible" records instead of what they actually enjoy playing.

Start with artists you're really a fan of:

  • The Beatles
  • Pink Floyd
  • Fleetwood Mac
  • Taylor Swift

A collection should be personal. Collect what you like to play — not what others think is "valuable."

2. Invest in a good basic setup

You don't need to spend thousands, but avoid cheap suitcase players. A decent turntable with adjustable needle pressure and separate speakers really makes a difference.

Note:

  • Adjustable tonearm/needle pressure
  • Good cartridge
  • Stable surface
  • External speakers (no built-in mini speakers)

A good setup protects your records and ensures better sound.

3. Check the condition of the record

With second-hand vinyl, condition is everything. Always check:

  • Scratches and damage
  • Warping
  • Condition of the sleeve
  • Whether the record is clean

When buying online, always ask about the grading.

4. Store your collection properly

Vinyl is sensitive to heat, pressure and dust. Always store records:

  • Standing up (never stacked lying down)
  • In an inner sleeve
  • With a protective outer sleeve
  • Out of direct sunlight

A simple shelf like a Kallax system works great.

5. Discover, compare and expand smartly

A nice collection grows with you. Look for:

  • First pressings
  • Reissues
  • Colored vinyl editions
  • Limited editions

Finally

Vinyl collecting isn't about speed, it's about experience. Take your time. Dive into the album artwork. Read the liner notes. Enjoy the whole process.
