Elvis Costello bracht met zijn band The Attractions in 1981 het album *Almost Blue* uit. Dit album bestaat voornamelijk uit covers van country- en countryrocknummers, waarmee Costello zich onderscheidde van zijn eerdere werk dat vooral binnen de new wave en punk viel. *Almost Blue* bevat interpretaties van klassiekers van onder anderen Hank Williams en George Jones. Het album markeert een duidelijke stap in een andere muzikale richting binnen Costello’s oeuvre.
