Elvis Costello bracht in 1978 zijn tweede studioalbum uit, getiteld *This Year's Model*. Het album werd geproduceerd door Nick Lowe en opgenomen met zijn band The Attractions. De plaat bevat onder andere de singles "Pump It Up" en "Oliver's Army" en wordt gezien als een belangrijk werk binnen de new wave en punkrock. *This Year's Model* markeert een ontwikkeling ten opzichte van zijn debuutalbum, met een stevigere en directere sound. Het album ontving bij uitkomst overwegend positieve kritieken en heeft sindsdien een vaste plaats verworven in de pop- en rockgeschiedenis.
