Elvis Costello bracht in 1977 zijn debuutalbum uit, getiteld *My Aim Is True*. Het album markeert de start van zijn carrière en bevat een mix van rock, punk en new wave. De productie is relatief eenvoudig, met scherpe teksten en een directe muzikale benadering. *My Aim Is True* kreeg bij uitkomst positieve kritieken en wordt sindsdien gezien als een belangrijk album binnen de punk- en new wavebeweging van eind jaren zeventig.
